Well another Fall trip to Tobin lake In Saskatchewan is a wrap. We were there from 9/8-9/16. Managed to get in 5 days of fishing and 2 windy days of golfing. The fishing was just OK. Not one of our better years for big Pike ( Over 40″ ) My boat ended up with 4 over 40 and the other boat ended up with 10 over 40. We did catch lots of 35-39″ fish as well. This was my first time there as a boater and I spent a fair amount of time looking for some new spots. I also did not want to just play follow the leader an just follow the other boat from spot to spot so that probably cost my boat a few more big fish. The water temp’s were also still rather warm ( 63-67 Deg’s. ) which I also think did not help. I think if the water temps had been in the mid to upper 50’s it would have really helped the bite. That’s one of the problems with planning a trip so far in advance, you are stuck with the conditions you get. I had plans to spend more time fishing for walleyes as the lake is know for its great Big walleye fishing, I just was not able to mark many of them on the locator that I normally see in lots of our normal locations, once again I think the water temp was a factor. We only managed 2 walleyes all week while fishing the pike. One 24″ and the other a 26″ As far as the golf went, It was a great time on a beautiful course. Its hard to describe how great of shape the course was in up there. It simply just doesn’t get much business and they keep it in GREAT shape. The Greens were some of the nicest I’ve played on and rather challenging. I did manage to shoot my best round of the year. My goal this summer was to shoot a 90 or better and I ended up with a 85 on our second outing. Man is golf a fun game when you are feeling and hitting the ball well. Its also a aggravating game when you are not. For those who are wondering what a Canada trip like this may cost I keep good track of expenses Here is the breakdown :

The Cabin we stayed in was really nice and Newer. Per person cost in US $ for the 8 nights was 575.00 There was only 4 of us but the cabin would sleep 6 so if you had 6 the cost would be even less.

Truck gas up and back was around 260.00 US # so 130.00 each with 2 of us. Even lower if you had 3 people

Boat Gas was about 60.00 US per day so 30.00 each per day or 150.00 each for the 5 days. – Even lower if you had 3 people

License was 84.00 US $ each

Landing Fee was 60.00 per boat for the week so 30.00 each.

So I figure my cost for the trip was around right around 1,000 for the 8 day trip. Plus golf cost. Not even sure what we paid. I think the beer cost more than the golf fee’s toast

If anyone wants more Info. about the trip, feel free to PM me.

Here are just a few fish pictures from the trip and one from the ride home that I thought was cool.

The over 40″ pike up there seems like nothing special but the under 90 golf sure does. It was on a what I feel was a rather tough course as well.

Sounds like another successful trip even if you didn’t catch the normal numbers of high quality fish. Definitely warmer than usual, even around here too.

Looks like an awesome trip fishthump! That lake has been on my bucket list and hope to make it up there one day. Not a bad price either!

If you ever make the trip, I’d look into staying at the Rusty Hook. Really nice newer built Cabins and Great People running it. They have a store right there on site as well. Its got great Big Walleye fishing, We just never take time to figure out the walleye bite there. I’d be glad to share what Info. I have to help you on your trip.

It’s a cool lake. Went up there last year for the first time. Heading up again for the full moon in October. Fingers crossed it doesn’t get too cold because end of October can be risky. Pretty much just targeted walleyes last year but this year going for longer and plan to fish pike some. The lady at the resort last year actually showed us some pics from “some other guys from MN”. They were your fish – I recognized them from your post here.

Something that never gets talked about much is the amount of trees in the lake. It is quite intimidating when you can see countless full size trunks sticking out in 20-60’ of water. Gotta be careful. Scary to think what is just under the surface…

Ya. The first time I was up there that was something I thought was really crazy as well. Each year there is getting to be less and less of them. There is probably less than a 1/4 of them left from my first trip there 5 years ago. My guess is in a few more years they will all be gone. They use to offer a lot of cover for the fish. Its sad they are all slowly going away. My buddy said when he first started going there they were everywhere. They use to use what they call the Carrot river landing and said they use to bring waders and push all the drift wood tree’s out of the way just to land the boat. Most of the remaining wood is rather visible ( Those still above water anyways ) its nice that the seagulls are always sitting on and marking them for you grin This lake is far less scary than Reed lake where we go in spring. My buddy is headed back up there on Monday. You must have talked with Gayle at Tobin lake Resort. She always ask for pictures from us. Most of their guest only fish Walleye and are shocked when she shows them some of the pike pictures.
