Midwestern Pet Foods Inc. has recalled some lots of Sportmix High Energy pet food after dog deaths were reported.

According to the company, the dog and cat food that was distributed nationally is being recalled due to Aflatoxin, which is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus. Aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets.

Symptoms of Aflatoxin poisoning include, sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice and or diarrhea. If your pet shows these symptoms contact a veterinarian.

Illnesses and deaths have been reported in dogs. No cat or human illness has been reported.

Lot code information can be found on the back of the bag and will appear in a three line code with the top line in the format of “EXP 03/03/22/05/L#/B###/HH:MM”. The lots being recalled are:
    •50# Sportmix Energy Plus Lots Exp 03/02/22/05/L2, 03/02/22/05/L3, 03/03/22/05/L2

Those with these lots are asked to not feed the food to their pets and to destroy it in a way that no pets, children or wildlife can access it. Additionally they are asked to clean any bowls that had the food in them
