Hey, I was wondering, what is the best shotgun load for ruffled grouse, not lead? So maybe a 16 or 20 gauge shotgun, when used on federal land, so a non toxic load, as they say. Thanks for any advice. Or maybe for even a 28 gauge ruger red label.

    Have a good one.

Federal makes a 6 and 7.5 steel shell for 20 gauge. I think I have used 6s before.

The Federal steel loads are OK for 20 gauge. I use a 1920s vintage 16 gauge a fair amount after the leaves fall. It won’t tolerate steel so I have a couple boxes of #6 bismuth stashed away that work well. Very tough to find the bismuth.

Grouse die fairly easily when hit with just about anything commercially available. Just remember that steel patterns a bit tighter than lead when choosing your choke.

a 5/8 oz load of TSS 9’s out of a 28 gauge would be a lot of fun in the grouse woods.

I haven’t used steel yet on grouse but have on a lot of red squirrels and I wasn’t dissapointed. I’m sure it will work for Grouse.
