Backyard Rink

I haven’t dealt with a rink without a liner but here are my thoughts.

I’d try and get a couple thin layers down while it’s cold to seal up the holes you have. Then after they’ve frozen solid put some heavier layers down to build it up. Use hot water if you can. That’ll help to knock down some of the bumps.

I just think you need to keep adding layers. Even those holes where the water is running through need to seal up eventually. I think it’ll start to even out too.

Yeah keep spraying. It should fill in. You just have to keep building ice slowly. I use a liner but have flooded my fair share of outdoor rinks. Flood freeze flood freeze…repeat repeat repeat

Just added another layer in the dark so can’t see what happened that well but holy…is it cold. Good for ice making I guess

There’s one on the pond in Carver Bluffs, and then someone across the street has a backyard rink, both have lights so that could be it. Right off JCP.

Not me but I did have to ask all of my neighbors if they mind the lights and the banging of sticks and pucks. All of them said no big deal. I have an older gentlemen that is a newish neighbor. When I talked to him about it he says he moved his furniture in his living room so he could watch the kids skate and sometimes sits for hours watching them. Yup instantly had something in my eye that moment.

The ones I see are right off county road 40. Same house that always has people shooting bows all summer.

Waaaaaay taller than the boards. The pic doesn’t do it justice.

Had a nice NYE party with a couple other kids on the team.

Yeah running out of room to throw it. Hope the neighbor don’t mind having some extra snow in his yard.

I don’t know about everyone else but I had my best ice of the season the last couple nights after the rain. It was a nice reset after the warmer weather.

Seriously considering it tomorrow. I want to see some single digits though. The wind on Sunday is going to blow tons of tumbleweeds onto the rink so I’m still undecided. I’ll check the forecast tomorrow again.

So tempting but I think I’m gonna pass. Even if it builds an inch or two over the next few days the 10 day looks warmer than the next 5. Then if we get any snow with less than 3” of ice, it’s gonna be a total mess. I wanna see at least 5 consecutive nights below 15 degrees.

Screw it. I’m filling it today. Looking at all the small ponds in my area they all look like they have 2”+ of ice. I see a low on Tuesday in the single digits. Every low this week has been 5 degrees lower than predicted.

I really regret not filling it on Monday or Tuesday now. I think I would’ve had skatable ice by next weekend.

I’m a little worried about the wind but I remember in years past I would skim the tumbleweeds out before it froze without problems. It should be full by tomorrow morning so I’m not worried about the tarp going anywhere.

I really envy all of you. Brings back such good memories of younger years. Enjoy these times, it’s worth every bit of effort you put into it.

Just finished filling it. I believe the worst of the wind is over. I’ve got about a dozen leaves in the middle of the rink wedged around some ice chunks. Pretty minimal if you ask me. At one point it looked like a tornado came though our yard and kicked leaves 20’ in the air. Supposed to get to around 12 tonight and single digits tomorrow night. Wednesday isn’t going to be ideal but if there’s enough ice to walk, I’ll head out there and chisel out some of the leaves.

The rink looks big until you get 4-5 people on it. It would be a legit boot hockey rink for adults though. Nothing says winter like bruises on your elbows, knees and hips the next morning.

Woke up to 9 this morning even though the forecast said 15. Should be single digits again tonight. Forecast says 9, hoping it’s wrong on the high side yet again. That’s the good news. The bad news is the 7-10 day looks about 5-10 degrees warmer than it said yesterday. My hope for skatable ice in the foreseeable future is waning.

Crisis averted was able to get all leaves out of the pool before it froze looking good now.
