Anyone out there try bowfishing in February? I live in Northern MN and it’s pretty hard to find open water with rough fish around where I normally bowfish in the summer. I’m sure there are river outlets and such in Southern MN that don’t fully freeze over. Anyone know of a place like that?

The MNDNR regs have ‘Spearing/Archery/dip nets’ all in the same section and says that the season is May 1 – Last Sunday in Feb. Does that mean that archery is the same as spearing? I would think so because any fish you shoot is reduced to possession..
February 4, 2011 at 7:26 pm #933835There are some different regulations between spearing and bowfishing. I read through the regulations for MN and WI every year several times because most people don’t know about or understand bowfishing. I always want to be knowledgeable so as to not make a bad name for the sport.
February 23, 2011 at 11:42 pm #940929there is a guy on here i cant remember his name i know he is pretty big into bowfishing and if i remember right he posted some pics at a later time of some winter bow fishing and think he said he cuts a large hole in the ice and does it that way
March 4, 2011 at 8:32 pm #944132The season is closed as of this past Sunday at midnight and will reopen on May 1st. Yes bowfishing can and has been done through the ice. Just like the guys spearing cut a hole, use what you can as a darkhouse, and find the fish. Now finding the fish is perhaps the harder part to the system. What I found helps is talking with the guys spearing and they will usually let you know if they are seeing any carp and at what time. A couple years back a couple of buddies and I shot 73 carp in a weekend thru the ice and it was a blast! The second picture was the fish from the first day.

I didn’t even know it was worth it in the winter. Now I have something new to look into.
