Detroit Lakes Area Fishing Report 1-27

Well, I managed to make it out with my son Lucas to enjoy some crappie fishing on Sunday afternoon. We headed out late in the afternoon in hopes of setting up and catching fish as soon as possible. Our last outing for walleyes was a bust, so I needed to make sure to provide Lucas with some action.

We setup of the base of the break in 30 fow. There were a few blips on the flasher towards the bottom that didn’t show much interest, so I decided to jig around 6-8 feet off the bottom. It didn’t take long and the flasher started to light up.

Over the course of the next 2 hours, we had our hands full in catching around 35-40 crappies. I managed to get more of them by jigging a 5mm Chekai jig and CJS pink plastic(see picture), while both of our bobber rods saw action as well. I tried tipping this with a waxworm right away but only had a few lookers. Once I switched over to the plastic I had fish charging 6-8 feet to meet me 10-12 feet off the bottom.

Many of our fish were in the 10″ range but Lucas did manage to land the biggest fish that taped out at 13″ on the nose. Needless to say he reminded me of it while we continued to catch fish as well as on the ride home!

It was a great couple hours out on the ice and I am glad I was able to get him to experience some fun in doing some catching!

  1. Thanks for sharing Loren! Glad to see the little guy is getting into the action!! Good point- the plastics are awesome and it saves time re-baiting the hook!! The hard charging red lines- can’t get enough!! Good Report! I am hoping to get up to that area soon, less people and bigger fish!

    Tight lines,

    Jake
